On June 1, 2026, Ethiopia heads to its seventh national election since the fall of the Derg regime and the beginning of its multi-party political era in the early 1990s. For a country often described as the political and diplomatic heart of Africa, the election is significant. Yet few observers expect it to produce a surprise outcome.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his ruling Prosperity Party are widely expected to secure another decisive victory. Analysts point to a fragmented opposition, ongoing security challenges, and the ruling party’s strong political machinery as factors that make a major upset unlikely.

More than 50 million Ethiopians are registered to vote in an election that will determine the composition of the national parliament. However, voting is not taking place everywhere. Parts of the country affected by conflict, particularly in Tigray and sections of Amhara, remain outside the electoral process due to security concerns.

The election arrives at a difficult moment for Ethiopia. Although the government highlights economic growth, infrastructure development, and efforts at national reform, the country continues to grapple with armed insurgencies, ethnic tensions, displacement, and debates over political freedoms. Opposition groups and human rights advocates argue that restrictions on dissent and political activity have weakened genuine democratic competition.

This raises an important question: can an election truly reflect the will of the people when large sections of the population feel excluded from the political conversation?

For many Ethiopians, the issue is not simply who wins, but whether the electoral process can help heal divisions in a nation still recovering from years of conflict. As ballots are cast across Africa’s second-most populous country, the outcome may be predictable, but the deeper challenge of building an inclusive and stable democracy remains unresolved.
